Rise in Food-Borne Illness Propels the Anti-Counterfeit Packaging Market

Published By: IndustryARC Published On : 10-Oct-2016

In the past decade, due to greater access of technology to the masses, the number of fake food products in the market has increased drastically. This has created ways for local manufacturers to package their product under the false brand name of established companies. This creates a bad reputation for the company and decreases their brand value. Consumption of these fake products leads to food-borne illnesses and various side-effects. This has a lot of economic effects as well. The perceived economic impact include the losses incurred by particular industry as well as the healthcare costs due to food-borne illness. To counter these effects, major manufacturers have focused on better packaging techniques so that it is easy for the consumers to distinguish the real from the phony product.

These packaging technologies go from the very basic innovation in packaging designs to the newly introduced use of DNA in packing materials. The most commonly used methods are the use of holograms, barcodes and radio frequency identification (RFID). RFID is the most widely accepted technology in the packaging industry and accounts for almost 75% in the packaging market due to its ease of usage and low cost. This technology targets the identification of goods through a small microchip. Due to the presence of the connected microchip, they can be considered as the next generation of bar codes with added functionality.

The product manufacturers aim to verify the authenticity of the product by locating an RFID tag with specific product and reference information. This helps in providing an extra layer of security and the manufacturers would know if the product or package gets tampered with at any stage of the supply chain. Apart from these, the regional differences also play a major role in the growth of the anti-counterfeit packaging market. Different regions have different set of regulations and recommendations to counter fake products, but due to advancements in science & technology, all major geographical regions have successfully adopted most of the packaging methods and technologies.
